Editorial Policy
How we research, write, and maintain our family law guides.
Our Mission
Unvow exists to make family law accessible to everyone. Divorce, custody disputes, child support, and other family legal matters are among the most stressful experiences a person can face. We believe that understanding the process — in plain, clear language — helps people make better decisions during difficult times.
Why This Site Exists
Legal information should not be locked behind expensive consultations or buried in dense statutory language. Unvow was created to bridge the gap between official legal sources and the people who need to understand them. Our guides translate complex family law topics into practical, plain-English explanations that help readers understand their rights and options before speaking with an attorney.
Our Editorial Standards
Every article on Unvow is held to the following standards:
- Accuracy — All information is based on publicly available legal sources, including state statutes, judiciary websites, and official court resources.
- Clarity — Content is written in plain English so that non-lawyers can understand the process, requirements, and their options.
- Objectivity — We present legal information without bias or advocacy. We do not recommend specific legal strategies or outcomes.
- Currency — Articles are reviewed and updated regularly to reflect changes in state laws and procedures.
- Transparency — We clearly disclose that our content is educational and does not constitute legal advice.
How We Research Our Guides
Our research process prioritizes official, authoritative sources. For each guide, we:
- Identify the relevant state statutes, family codes, and court rules that govern the topic.
- Review official judiciary websites and court resources for procedural information, filing requirements, and forms.
- Consult official child support guidelines, custody standards, and property division rules published by state agencies.
- Cross-reference information across multiple authoritative sources where possible.
- Translate the legal language into clear, accessible explanations while preserving accuracy.
For more detail on our research methodology, see our review process and sources methodology pages.
Source Verification
We prioritize primary legal sources in our research:
- Primary sources (preferred) — Official state judiciary websites, state legislature and statute databases, official child support guideline publications, court filing instructions and forms, and government legal resource pages.
- Secondary sources (when primary unavailable) — State bar association publications, legal aid organizations, and government educational legal resources.
We do not intentionally cite unofficial blogs, forums, or unverifiable sources. If a claim cannot be traced to an authoritative source, we aim to omit it or note that requirements vary and recommend consulting an attorney.
Update Policy
Family law changes regularly as states update statutes, modify guidelines, and revise court procedures. Our update process includes:
- Regular review cycles to check for legislative changes and updated court procedures.
- Updating articles when significant changes occur in state law.
- Displaying the last-updated date on every article so readers know how current the information is.
- Marking the date of last review even when no changes were needed.
